2017 Booker Wines Ripper Grenache  96pts
Paso Robles, California 
Not just Paso Robles, its freaking BOOKER. Eric and Lisa Jensen purchased 100 acres of historic Paso Robles property in 2001 with the intent of growing the best fruit for the best wineries in the area. After making wine with Justin Smith (of Saxum) for five years and Stephan Asseo (of L'Aventure Wines) for two years, the Jensens decided it was time to create their own expression of Booker Vineyard. Very similar to Châteauneuf du Pape, the 100% Grenache, extended-aged Ripper brings masculine notes of dark strawberry jam and raspberries at the absolute peak of their ripeness. The fruit density in the mid-palate is downright shocking. Black raspberry, smoky bay leaf and espresso flavors build gorgeous tension through the finish. Big WOW factor here, as the wine is just so warm, bouncy, boozy and fun as hell to drink!

Winemaker Aaron Pott reveals the passion and harmony embodied in this love affair. A harmonious blend of 82% Cabernet Franc - 15% Merlot - 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. Blackbird's ongoing commitment to quality emphasizes partnering with some of Napa Valley's most prestigious vineyards, they ensure high-quality fruit sources. Gravelly Shiflett Vineyard in Yountville, a moderate climate with a foggy marine influence contributing to cool summer mornings and mild afternoons. Hudson Vineyard - Perched on a rolling hillside in the cool climate of Carneros. Stagecoach Vineyard - Atop the Vaca Mountains south of Pritchard Hill, Atlas Peak - with its rocky, volcanic terroir. Crocker & Starr Vineyard  in St. Helena - a deep pocket of well-drained gravel creating aromatics, impressive structure and finesse. Blueberry, black cherry, cedar, porcini mushrooms, violet and mint. Simply captivating.

What started as a crazy dream to make world class wines in Walla Walla over 40 years ago has become a true success story. The Figgins family pursuit of excellence in viticulture and winemaking is uncompromising, the wines reflect a deep sense of place and a connection to the land. Founded by Gary and Nancy Figgins in 1977 as Walla Walla's first commercial winery, Leonetti draws inspiration from Gary's Calabrian-Italian immigrant grandparents. Gary's son Chris has been running things since 2011, racking up score after score. His wines are both woefully limited and sublimely delicious. Don't these two traits seem to go hand in hand in the wine world? This Merlot will blow you away with how much horsepower its packing. Sappy, forest freshness complements the smooth, thickness of dark plums and gooey darker berries. The palate has rich broad tannins and luxurious kirsch flavors pervade the bold, assertive finish. 94% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon - it spent 15 months in 60% new French oak.

Moon Mountain - Sonoma, California
We're going to the moon! Moon Mountain!! In 1980, Robert Kamen, a native New Yorker celebrating the sale of a screenplay, fell in love with and purchased 280 acres on the southwestern slopes of the Mayacamas Range in Sonoma County. This mountainous property was rugged, overgrown, extremely rocky and very remote: virgin territory with no roads and no power. It was isolated, wild, beautiful and full of potential. From the beginning, Robert had a clear concept of what he intended for his property - to plant the highest quality Cabernet Sauvignon. This is 100% Estate grown, at elevations of 1100-1450 ft. The 2016 is racy, powerful and explosive, as the wines always are. Dark red cherry jam, iron, cedar, tobacco, smoke and rose petals all race out of the glass as this inky, plush Cab shows off its curves. Even though it is made in a rich, super-concentrated style, the Kamen Cabernet Sauvignon typically needs the better part of a decade to reach maturity. Here's a sneak peek.
